The Ontario Disability Support Program

If you are on ODSP, you and your family may be able to get free or low-cost dental treatment. Our dental team will explain everything clearly and make sure your care is safe, comfortable, and easy to understand.
What is ODSP?
ODSP stands for the Ontario Disability Support Program. It helps people with disabilities in Ontario by giving them money for basic needs like food, rent, and health care, including dental care.
If you are approved for ODSP, you may also get dental coverage for you and your family. At Sheppard Markham Dental, we are happy to accept ODSP and help you get the dental care you need.
Who Can Get ODSP Dental Coverage?
ODSP dental coverage is available for:
- People who receive ODSP
- Their spouse or partner
- Their children under 18
- Adult dependents who live with them
To get dental benefits, you must first be approved for ODSP.
What Dental Services Does ODSP Cover?
- Dental check-ups and exams
- Teeth cleanings
- X-rays
- Fillings for cavities
- Tooth extractions (removing a tooth)
- Root canals (for infected or damaged teeth)
- Dentures (full or partial, and repairs)
- Emergency dental care for pain or infections
Note: ODSP does not usually cover cosmetic treatments such as whitening or braces unless approved for medical reasons.
How to Apply for ODSP
You can apply for ODSP:
- Online at the official Ontario website (application takes 20–30 minutes)
- By phone – Call toll-free: 1-888-999-1142
- In person – Book an appointment at your local ODSP office
If you need help while waiting for ODSP approval, you can also apply for Ontario Works (OW).
Tip: Have your documents ready when applying, such as your OHIP card, ID, bank info, tax records and more.
What If You Have Other Dental Insurance?
If you have another dental plan (like one from work), ODSP can help cover what your plan doesn’t pay. This is called Coordination of Benefits. Just let us know about your other plan so we can help you get the most support.
Programs That Work With ODSP
You may also qualify for other dental programs:
- Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO): For children under 18 in low-income families
- Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): Helps adults with no private insurance
- Transitional Health Benefit: If you’re leaving ODSP but still need dental help
- ACSD Program: For families with children who have severe disabilities
These programs can work with ODSP to lower or remove dental costs.
